Boy, 10, dies days after being diagnosed with flu, pneumonia and sepsis during school hockey trip to New York



  • Nico Mallozzi, of Connecticut, was on a hockey trip to New York last weekend

  • He was so ill he had to miss all the games; he was eventually hospitalized and diagnosed with Influenza B which had progressed to pneumonia and sepsis

  • He died on Sunday morning in a hospital in Buffalo, New York

  • His family has set up a GoFundMe memorial fund page  

  • This year's flu has claimed more than 85 adult and 20 children's lives

  • US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported two strains of influenza viruses across the country, including H3N2 and H1N1 and B viruses

  • Officials say it is the first time the entire mainland has been struck at the same time with similar flu levels
